Heard + Seen Student Art Department Magazine

Seen + Heard was a junior-year design project at Lesley University’s College of Art + Design. The publication was created as part of a semester-long course showcasing student work, with this issue centered on loneliness, connection, and the idea of becoming more aware of the people around us. Each student developed a visual response to a real personal interaction, giving the magazine a mix of individual voices and design styles while still working within one larger concept.

I served as a Teaching Assistant and lead designer, which gave me the opportunity to work beyond my own individual spreads and think about the magazine as a complete visual system. I helped establish a design language that could hold very different student work together without taking away each designer’s personality. We developed individual graphic markings for each designer and used typography, color, imagery, scale, page numbering and recurring graphic elements to create consistency across the publication.  My role pushed me to think like an art director—looking at pacing, hierarchy and how one spread transitions into the next rather than treating every page as an isolated design.

The project taught me a lot about editorial design, art direction and creative leadership. I had to balance experimentation with structure, collaborate with other designers, give feedback, solve layout problems and help bring many different visual approaches into one finished publication. The magazine ultimately became more than a collection of student projects; it became a cohesive representation of the Lesley Art + Design community and the different creative voices within it. Being credited as a TA while also contributing my own work made Seen + Heard one of my first opportunities to experience what it means to help guide a larger creative project from individual ideas into a unified final piece.
